The Dragon Tower in Hanoi, designed by Dewan Architects + Engineers, is the winner of the 2022 Global Design & Architecture Awards in the Mixed Use Category; the tower is expected to change a landmark in Vietnam. Designed to be the longest building in the world at 700,000 square metres, the building will provide functions such as a ministerial hall, meeting rooms and public spaces, including a nursery, library, supermarket, restaurant and learning centre. A cistern and green platform were incorporated into the design to increase the efficiency and accessibility of the building.
The building is a composite of two parts. The ground floor is an artificial topography that accommodates raised elongated offices in the shape of a dragon. Inspired by the Fairy Mountains, one of Vietnam's main natural features, green terraces connect subsidiary functions to the main square. The reservoir is inspired by the Sa Pa area, a deep valley formed by ancient rice terraces. It controls flooding, increases natural ventilation and controls temperature by purposefully submerging certain platforms during the rainy season. This submerged area shapes stepped platforms for public activities, and the public spaces they extend become an extension of the city.
Grinding diamond tools makes the building present to everyone in the most beautiful manner, so that the designer's work can be realized.
